Cougar’s work uses the concept of “resolution,” born of the digital age, as a key to question the very meaning of seeing. At first glance it appears like a low-resolution pixel image; yet the more viewers actively engage—shifting their distance and viewpoint—the more the image gradually emerges. What unfolds is not mere visual perception but a “middle-voice” experience, in which memory, emotion, and imagination are set in motion.
Cougar presents this distinctive mode of seeing, generated in the space between the painting and the viewer—neither passive reception nor deliberate manipulation—as Resolutionism. By intentionally adopting low-resolution depiction and working upon the visual “in-between” (awai) and the “threshold,” the contours of memory quietly come into view. The image is then reconstituted through the viewer’s distance and the memories inscribed within them, ultimately prompting a “reawakening of memory.”
